"The Natural I"

There has been a recent trend in the juvenile industry to provide more environmentally sensitive products. Colgate Mattress Atlanta is no exception. In 2007, we introduced our Natural I mattress at the annual Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association industry trade show.

After making some modifications, we began shipping this product in the fall of 2007. It has become an overwhelming success.

As you may be aware there are several other manufacturers that are promoting their products as "natural" or "organic." The problem is that just by saying it is "natural" or "organic" doesn't necessarily make it so. The problem is compounded as there are no specific regulations outlining what the exact definitions of "natural" or "organic" means when it comes to a crib mattress.

At Colgate, we have made sure that before we labeled our product as natural, that we indeed did use all natural products components in our mattress. This is why there is no steel in our "Natural I". A mattress cannot be called "natural/organic" if it has an innerspring as steel is a product of smelting iron ore.

The Colgate "Natural I" has three components. They are as follows - coir fiber, felted cotton and a certified organic cotton cover. Let's take a moment to look at these materials.

Coir fiber - This material comes from outer casings of coconuts. When it is woven together it is an incredibly durable product. Currently, we use this product as an insulator on our innerspring mattresses. However, in Europe, they have been using a coir fiber block as the basis for mattresses for many years. They use this in lieu of polyurethane foam and innersprings.

We worked with our supplier to develop the correct density of the coir so that it will provide the firmness that a developing infant will need as well as the durability that today's crib mattresses need since most of today's cribs convert to toddler beds and crib mattresses are now required to support children some times up to the age of five. The core of the mattress is five inches.

Felted cotton - For decades Colgate Mattress Atlanta has been using felted cotton in its innerspring mattresses as a cushioning layer. By using felted cotton we achieve two goals. The first goal is to add a layer of cushioning to the mattress.

The second goal is to meet the Federal Flammability standards, which is now an open flame test. Felted cotton is a natural fire barrier and the test results prove it.

Organic cotton - The final component is a certified organic cotton cover. Since this is the layer that actually is closest to the infant, Colgate wanted to ensure that the finest product available was chosen. This is the reason that we chose a certified product over all of the other products that were available.

The texture is very soft to the touch, but yet sturdy enough to serve your infant's needs. Having this luxurious cover, the "Natural I" will provide a wonderfully comfortable sleeping surface for your infant.

As with all products there are positives and negatives. To have a truly natural/organic mattress, a compromise has to be made. Being that the cover is cotton, it has no waterproofing characteristics. However, there are other products available to the consumer that will retain moisture and are still natural.

Colgate is still very proud of our regular line of mattresses as we strive to achieve the utmost in quality at each price point. However, for the consumer who wants to put their infant on an alternative type of crib mattress, we now offer them this choice.
