How many Classica crib mattresses are there? What are their features?
What size is my crib mattress and how will it fit in the crib?
The size for all standard crib mattresses is regulated by the Federal government. The size is 28 (-3/4") x 52 (-3/8") and not being thicker than 6 inches. Crib sizes are also regulated, but their interior dimensions have a "plus or minus" tolerance from the standard 28 x 52 rectangle. Therefore depending on the specific crib and mattress combination, the mattress will either be very snug or moderately snug.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission sets the standards for crib and crib mattress sizes and how the combination should fit. At Colgate, we abide by all government regulations. If you would like more specific information, please refer to the CPSC's requirements for full-size baby cribs .
Does Colgate make custom sized mattresses and pads?

I saw a Colgate mattress in a store but it is not listed on the Colgate website. Why?
Colgate's website lists only mattresses and other products that are part of Colgate's regular product line. Private label mattresses and other products made exclusively for specific customers are not listed on the website. For example, we make a line of exclusive mattresses for Buy Buy Baby Also, we are constantly adding new products to our product line and some of these may not have made it to our website yet. Questions regarding mattresses not on the Colgate website should be directed to the store that sells that mattress.
Can I buy a Colgate product directly from you?
I can't find the specific product or model that I am looking for from a nearby dealer listed on the Colgate website. Where can I find a dealer that will sell me the specific item I am looking for?
Colgate has such an extensive line of crib mattress models that it is impractical for any single store to carry them all. Generally, a retailer will carry 4-5 units that meet the needs of their market. These units may not be the one you are seeking.
Most of the authorized Colgate retailers will gladly order the Colgate product you want and have it shipped to them with their next regular Colgate shipment. Call your nearest Colgate retailer and ask them if they will perform this service for you.
What is the difference between a "California" mattress and a regular mattress? What flame retardants or chemicals do you use to meet the law?
Effective January 1, 2005, the State of California enacted Technical Bulletin 603 (TB 603). This regulation has to deal with an "open flame" test for mattresses. This is a more stringent regulation regarding flammability than the previous federal standard (CFR- 1632). The federal government then adopted a slightly more stringent standard on July 1, 2007. All of our standard innerspring mattresses were compliant with the standard without any changes needing to be made. There are two ways to have mattresses meet the new standard. One is to load them up with flame retardant chemicals and the other is to use a barrier fabric made of cellulose material. At Colgate Mattress, we chose to use a barrier fabric which resists the open flame ignition in accordance with the law. We have never used a chemical agent in the foam we use in our crib mattresses.
What is the price of one of your products?
Colgate does not set retail pricing on any of their products. Retail prices are determined solely by the retailer.
Do you recommend mattress pad covers for your mattresses? Why use a mattress pad cover since the vinyl covers on the mattresses are wetproof?
Although all of our crib mattresses have wetproof covers, many parents use an additional wetproof mattress pad to ensure that the mattress will last for a longer period of time. Many of the current cribs convert to toddler beds/daybeds for longer use.
By using a waterproof pad, the mattress will not have as much exposure to the natural fluids. Another benefit of using a waterproof mattress pad is that it can be thrown in the washing machine for easy cleaning.
Will the chemicals in the mattress or mattress cover harm my baby?
All of our materials are non-toxic. There are specific federal regulations that we must meet with regard to the chemicals used in our raw materials. We always meet or exceed these Federal regulations. For additional information on this topic, please refer to the Health and Safety section of our website.
Why is the mattress so hard? Will it be uncomfortable for my baby?
Because a newborn will be developing rapidly over the next two years, Colgate crib mattresses are designed to cater to an infant's growth. We as adults are already fully developed and choose a mattress for the most comfortable sleep. With an infant, however, the mattress is more than a sleeping surface. It is their growth and developmental center.
During their sleeping periods, an infant needs a firm, flat, even surface to maximize his or her development. This is particularly important when the infant begins to become more active in the crib.
They need the firm surface to provide the resistance as they begin to push up, turn and eventually stand in the crib. A solid mattress base provides the resistance necessary for developing and strengthening muscles. Is it easier for us to walk on a wooden floor or a waterbed? That is the same concept when an infant begins to stand in its crib.
How come the sheets don't fit on my Colgate mattress?
The majority of our mattresses range in height from five inches (5") to six inches (6"). Other producers of crib mattresses generally make their units five inches in height.
As a result many sheet manufacturers design their product to fit only a five inch mattress. Obviously, one may have a problem putting these sheets on one of our six inch units. Generally speaking, better quality sheets will be made to fit a mattress that is six inches in height.
Please consult with you retail salesperson for the best choice for your mattress and sheets.
Colgate mattresses are hard to find. Why are Colgate crib mattresses harder to find in stores than other brands of crib mattresses?
Because we produce premium quality products, our products are retailed primarily at infant specialty stores. At an infant specialty store, a knowledgeable salesperson can explain all of the different quality features that we put into our products. It is these interior components that separate our products from other units in the marketplace.
As you may already know, we produce many styles of crib mattresses. This can become an overwhelming experience for first-time parents trying to decide on the best choice for their baby. The expertise of a specialty store salesperson will help guide you through this process.
